I'm going to be a See Jane Run Ambassador again this year. I am captain of Team Coffee Run if you want to join us in Wichita next September. Next month on my other blog (http://www.iamstaceylynn.com ) I will be giving away a free race entry. I'll post details here when the raffle goes up.
If you're thinking you CAN'T do a half... you're wrong. If I can do it, pretty much anyone can. They do also offer a 5k, both a timed one and an untimed one. You 100% do NOT have to run the whole thing. Run some, walk some. You'll get it done.
And there will be chocolate and champagne waiting for you at the finish line!

14 in 2014
I debated about signing up for this challenge. Mono hit me hard (yeah I know I'm a bit old to have mono) and it derailed me from 13 in 3013, but I'm not one to accept failure - so here goes again.
14 races in 2014.
The first will be my own virtual race (My sorta birthday 5k)
Go here to sing up yourself. You can do 14 of a particular type or a combination like I chose.

It's May, At least I think it is
When I think of May weather, snowstorms don't come to mind. Even parts of TEXAS are supposed to get snow. I've lived in TX and snow is not something I worried about in late spring, early summer. Usually this time of year I'm worried about forgetting my sunscreen and keeping hydrated. I'm starting to miss those worries.
Between the weather and the mono my training has really taken a hit. I'm still doing Hospital Hill, but I have made peace with barely finishing or perhaps getting a DNF. Gotta keep moving towards the goal and if I miss it this year, I'll get it next year.
It's been easy to feel like giving up. I'm exhausted and that race has a rep for being tough. Hill is in the name after all. Plus it's local to me and I've SEEN the hill. But, I can walk - however slowly and I will give it a shot. Worst that can happen is that I don't finish. No, the worst is to not try. So I figure that if I go for it, I'm already better off than the absolute worst thing that can happen. :-) I've gotten a dnf before, so that's no concern. And I suspect I'll have fun. Hard not to have fun around runners.

Weekend wrap up
My exercise is still on hold. Being a 46 year old woman with mono kind of sucks! I'm more active, but still get exhausted easily, so long runs are out of the question. I did manage to work this weekend. Wore me out, but was worth it.
I have a year's worth of balloon scraps that I have dedicated myself to using up. Started by making this to set up where I am busking.

Got lots of attention and it was fun to see the reaction of people when they walked by.
I went out early because Sunday was the 25th Trolley Trail run. Lots of people out and about all morning. Wore my Newtons
I have several pairs, usually wear the purple ones to work, but these were right there and I was feeling lazy. :-) One of the great things about wearing them on Sunday was meeting and talking to all the other Newton Runners. Saw one guy in a Newton shirt and New Balance shoes. he and I spoke for quite awhile about shoes and running. I love runners. such a fun group.
The kids were great too. So excited about having done the kids race. Many of them gave me full recaps. It was great. I wish I gotten into racing at that young of an age. Makes me glad my daughters discovered the joy so much earlier than I did.
however much fun the weekend was it left me super tired. Today I have been just dragging, but am finally up and about. Now I can take advantage of the wonderful weather we have. Still no running, but I will get in a nice walk. moving is better than sitting still.

My Sorta Birthday 5k
This one is NOT the big one with a shirt, medal and all sorts of organization. This is just a fun thing I am doing to celebrate my birthday. I will have a free option or the option to participate in the fundraiser and get a trophy for $20.00. Each trophy will be personalized with the name of the participant. I have ordered a sample and will post a picture here when I get it in. Registration will open on my birthday - Dec 21. The race is officially Feb. 5, but people can do their runs anytime between Feb 1 - 8 .
Why am I holding a birthday 5k sometime in Feb when my birthday is in Dec?
Because nobody ever has time to celebrate with me in Dec. This year the Myans have taken over, but most years it's just so rushed with everyone getting ready for the holidays.
This year I turn 46, so 46 days after my birthday is when I am choosing to celebrate.
Join me!

Shadows
It's pretty common for obese people to walk with a particular waddle/shuffle motion. I'm not sure why - I think it's not bending the knees much. It results in a bouncing motion.
When I am tired and I slip into bad form when I am walking I do this again. I have to remind myself to relax because I'm almost always stiff.
Also when I am using bad form and running I will limp, favoring my right hip and putting stress on my left. I had a hip injury and sometimes I will favor it even when it's not really acting up.
Something I do to combat both situations is watch my shadow. I run in the early morning so the street lights are still on. It's not exactly a mirror, but it does show me things I am doing and I can correct.
tonight it made a difference. I was stiff from my squats and I kept slipping into bad form. If I kept running badly I would just end up in more pain.
So I watch my shadow self and make corrections. Little things that can make all the difference.

Motivational Savings
My daughters and I planned to do the Disney Princess Half in February. Youngest has a band competition so we can't do that. Luckily we hadn't registered yet. After an hours worth of discussion with my oldest we found a mutual acceptable substitute. She wanted Chicago, I wanted Wyoming. She wanted places in the deep south during the summer - I wanted places much cooler. What worked for both of us? San Francisco in June.
It was important to her that we do it as a family - so it had to work with little sister's schedule. As important was my lack of enthusiasm for our visit to Harry Potter World. She wanted to see that as much as run the race. I volunteered to fake it, but she wasn't having any of it.
But SF is good. Both daughters have wanted to visit and I love it there. Lived there as a kid back when there was still an Army base there.
I decided to put a little motivation into saving for fun money for the trip.

I have a large coffe cup shaped planter on my desk. For the moment that's where I am throwing the money in. When I reach 20 or so in change I will trade it for bills and set it aside. I have quite awhile, so if I stick to my savings plan we should have a good bit of fun money on our trip!

Soaring Wings virtual Half
I have a goal of running every half marathon in the state of Arkansas over the next 3 years. The Soaring Wings half in Conway is on my list so I did the virtual one this year. Will do it in person sometime in the next 3 years so I can cross it off.
I love virtual races. Not that I need to be in a race to go that far, but it's just good motivation.
The very first 5k I ever did was at the Hogeye in Fayetteville, AR. That's where I went to college, got married and had my first kid. My best friend still lives near there. She did it with me. Neither of us remembered those hills being as steep. Of course we were 20 and weighed a lot less. close to 200lbs less in my case. The EMTs were eyeing us suspiciously. I dared my friend to grab her left arm as we went by them and say "My arm sure is hurting" She wouldn't and I wasn't that brave either.
Now I've done that race a couple of times, lost 150lbs and those hills are still high, but not as bad.
The half at the Hogeye is the one I want to do first - next April. Because of that, I used my virtual race for The Soaring Wings as training. There is a hill nearby that is killer. I went up and down it 6 times. That plus the trip to and from the house made my race 13.3. They don't make a sticker for that distance so I will settle for 13.1. :-) Not the most exciting of courses, but it was good training. At least if my legs are supposed to feel like jello it was.
Took me over 4 hours. I know that some people can do full marathons in that time, but I'm not there yet. I didn't even try to run it, walked the whole thing. While I can and do run distances - not back and forth up this hill. I knew I would wear myself out if I didn't pace myself.

I did this hill 6x. Maybe I should have planned my time a little better. I had a 5k the night before, but it was warmer today, so I don't feel like it impacted me very much.
Now a couple of days off from running. Or walking. Or thinking about moving. I wonder if I can convince the kid to do the housework and bring me a glass of water. and an Advil. Maybe a cookie!

Barefoot Adventures In My Hometown
I want to make some plasti-socks. Minimalist gear that is basically socks with rubber on the bottom.
http://www.instructables.com/id/Barefoot-Running-Plasti-Socks/
So last night I head off to the big box hardware store for some of the plasti-dip stuff. No luck. He says try the automotive place.
I am not patient. Not at all. In years past I have seen this stuff at Wal-mart so I go there next. No luck, but they do have rubberized truck bed liner spray on stuff. Maybe it will work.
This morning I give it a try.
No, it does not work.
Not even a little bit.
Now I am going to head off to the store. It's about 3 miles to the nearest shopping center with an automotive place. 3 places within a mile of each other actually. I give the truck bed lined socks a go anyway. They last about 2 miles. Like I said, didn't work well.
I make most of the trip there barefoot, but I do have some Vibrams in my backpack for when I get to the stores.
Problem #1 occurs about 3/4 of a mile from my house. No crossing signal or crosswalk to get to the other side of main. But if you want to cross Hwy 71 at main you need to cross main to get to the crossing signal.
I go back east on Main for a bit until I get to a less busy area and then cross. Sans signal since the closest signal is 1/2 a mile down the road from the hwy.
Now I encounter problem #2. Seems the northbound access road does not have sidewalks or much of a shoulder. I use parking lots most of the way and when I can't I walk the 3 feet of space between traffic and a 4ft deep rock strewn, rainwater filled ditch. It's important to note that sidewalks come from the neighborhood and end at the access road. From there you are on your own! Luckily the shoulder gets to be about 6 feet wide as I get closer to Truman.
No signal at Truman but it is easy to cross.
No luck at any of the 3 autoparts stores.
Then I decide to go to Ace. I cross Blue Ridge which has a signal.
Problem #3. The crossing signal is timed to allow for 10 seconds to cross a 4 lane road with a turning lane in the middle. I'm not making this up. I ran and was not quite across by the time the light for the traffic changed!
Problem #4 The sidewalks along Blue Ridge. Sometimes they were great. Sometimes they would stop and start up again on the other side of the street. I didn't cross back and forth - no crosswalks anyway. I just kept going through the grass - and based on the wear, so do most people.
Found what I was looking for at Ace. Headed back across Blue Ridge and went through the shopping center.
Problem #5. Glass. I had taken my Vibrams back off because they are not the classic style and that's the only style that doesn't make my toes feel cramped. This is the reason I want to make Plasti-socks in the first place. I had to put them back on in the shopping center because of all the broken glass. I know it's mostly empty and dying, but I don't know how the realty company thinks they are going to rent any spaces out if they don't clean it once in awhile. Didn't go barefoot again until I reached Sam's Club. They keep the parking lot very clean.
Problem #6 was of my own making. Loose fitting tunic is NOT the thing to wear on windy days!! Blew up high enough to show my bra a couple of times. I finally just tied it. Looked a bit funny, but stayed in one place.
Also of my own doing was the silly notion to SHOP when I had to walk home. by the end of mile 4 I was feeling that extra 15 lbs in my backpack!!
Headed on down 15th to main. Then I realized it was almost 100% downhill from there. That felt nice! I was tired.
The crossing signal at main and 71 is great. You have almost forever to get across. Shame it's the narrowest place i had to cross in the entire trip.
Found my way back across main and then into my neighborhood.
Home, tired, but I got my 6 miles in.
And more importantly I have my plasti-dip to see if I can make this sock thing work.
More hilly that I thought. Didn't have my gps on, so this isn't 100% accurate. Doesn't account for the time spent wandering around in stores - which was not insignificant.

Mustache Dash
We had a great time. My ankle was acting up so I limped my way through it at a very very slow pace. My youngest daughter set a PR. I'm so proud of her!!
Proud of my older daughter too. She's faster than I am, but walked the whole way with me because the day was about spending time with her mother.
