Bottlebrush Art Scarf

Like the poppy scarf this one is designed to be hung as art or worn as art.

This is the photo that inspired me and the original start to the bottlebrush flowers.  I have changed the size on those several times.  

This is where I'm at

I have finally decided on the flower size and today I added the path that represents the Monterey Recreational Trail.   I'm loving the way it's coming out.  The background was worth all the time since I love that stitch.  It took nearly 20 hours and 700 yards of theread.

Poppy Scarf and Sunflower Scarf

Both are ready to have the ends woven in and to be blocked.

the poppy scarf took close to 50 hours and has 227 pieces.

the sunflower scarf has 66 pieces and 29 hours invested in it.

Botanic Explosion

This piece is already sold, but I really liked it so I thought I would share it.

It's made from a nice bamboo/wool sock yarn that was fun to work with.  I've posted a couple of the pieces that I used to make it.  These days I'm really enjoying working with tiny pieces to create larger works.

Sunflower Scarf WIP

A commissioned project.

Cotton thread

so far 8 cups of coffee have been consumed while creating this.  :-)

the sunflowers should standout against the background of sky blue flowers.

Progress is slow but steady.

a few inches of the back done.  I've done about 2 1/2 times this now.  Getting faster at it.  After I'm done with the back I'll fill in the front with a few more buds.

Lacy Scarf

I used one of the Red Heart boutique yarns for this one and I love the way the colors worked into the design.

Scarf in Progress

I am close to halfway done with the this scarf.  A couple of photos of what it looks like.  The one with the coffee cup is more true to color.  There isn't a pattern for it, but I am posting the patterns for the various pieces.  You just make a bunch and sew them together.

Loose infinity scarf - crochet version

Size L hook
Size F hook

Lightweight yarn I used Silken Effect by 5th Avenue

Chain 20 with larger hook
hdc in 3rd chain from hook & across

Rows 2 - 78
Chain 2 (counts as first hdc)
in back loop only hdc across

fasten off and weave in ends

Fold the scarf in half lengthwise matching up the ends a to a and b to b then give it a twist and match corners a to corners b

sew the ends together

you now have an infinity loop

For the gather strip use the smaller hook 

chain 11

hdc in 3rd chain from hook and across

Rows 2 - 20
Chain 2 (counts as first hdc)
in back loop only hdc across

fasten off and weave in ends

sew the small strip together in a tube around the scarf.  I position it to hide the seam where the scarf ends were sewn together.    Tucking a side under is a great alternative to just wearing it looped

Loose Infinity Scarf - Knitted Version

Size 11 needles
Size 6 needles

225 yards of a lightweight yarn.  I used Silken Effects by 5th Avenue.  Using a large needle gives the scarf a very loose light body.

cast on 150 stitches with size 11 needles
Work 3x3 rib for 6 inches
bind off loosely

Fold the scarf in half lengthwise matching up the ends a to a and b to b then give it a twist and match corners a to corners b

sew the ends together

you now have an infinity loop



for the small gather strip
cast on 12 with size 6 needles
work 3x3 rib for  20 rows
bind off

sew the strip together in a tube around the scarf.  I position it to hide the seam where the scarf ends were sewn together.  It's also great for tucking an end under for an alternative look to just wearing it looped.

Fortune Cookie Scarf

When it’s not being worn this fun scarf tucks down inside the cookie.  The long white scarf would be perfect for writing your own fortune on.  Embroider or fabric paint would work for that.

This is the crochet version.  In the next set of photos the scarf part is knitted in garter stitch - The goal is to make a long white scarf in whatever way works best for you.

  

materials

A) golden or light brown yarn in a 4 weight - about 100 yards  (Vanna’s Choice in example)

B) white yarn for scarf 5 weight.  - about 150 yards (Loops & Threads Charisma in example)

Size H hook

hdc= half double crochet

ch = chain stitch

ss = slip stitch

Start with sliding/magic ring

1)   Ch 2(counts as first hdc here and throughout) 9 hdc in ring

2)   Ch2, hdc same stitch,

hdc next stitch,

*2hdc next stitch, hdc following stitch,

repeat from * around.  

Join with ss to beginning chain 2

3)   Ch2, hdc same stitch

Fold circle in half and sew up one side for 13 stitches and then down two rows.  Repeat other side, leaving a gap for the scarf in the middle.

work until scarf is the length you want.  Example is 50 inches

fasten off

flip cookie inside out

find center of bottom row on scarf and match that up with the center of the cookie

sew scarf to the inside of cookie.

Flip cookie back to right side out

tack edges of scarf to one side of the cookie where it exits.  Keeps it from flopping around so much while you’re wearing it.

I think most crafters are like me - we don't' make things for ourselves very often.  It's fun to just give things away, even though we deserve snuggly goodness too.  Sarah over at Mommy in Pieces  broke the habit and not only made this cool scarf for herself - it has a matching hat!  (click on her blog to see the hat)

I think my mini goal for the last week in January will be to make something for myself.  

Fortune Cookie Scarf

On my list of patterns to write up is this one.  I love the way the fortune folds down into the cookie.  I didn't for this example, but you could use chain stitch, embroidery or fabric paint to write a fortune on the white scarf.

Now that I've reminded myself of how much I like the scarf, I think I will make an effort to get the pattern done by this weekend.  :-)

Finger Knit Braided Scarf

I got tired of playing with thread last night and decided to work on a scarf.  I have not done much with finger knitting in the past, so I decided to give it a try.

It's superfast.  I think it took me less and an hour and a half to make this scarf - even stopping to take pictures.

It's a braided scarf, so you need to make 3 pieces the same length.  Even making three skinny - 70 inch long scarves, it took less than an hour and a half.

I used some Loops & Threads Country Loom that I had left over from an afghan - took most of a skein.

Finger knitting is a lot like using a loom, only your fingers are the pegs.  It's something lots of people learn as children.  I didn't, but that's what I hear.  Start by weaving the yarn in and out around your fingers.   I'm right handed, so I wove on my left hand.

Than go back, so that you have yarn on both sides of your fingers.

Repeat so that you have two rows of yarn on your fingers.

Then bring the bottom row up and over the top row and off of the fingers.  That leaves one row of yarn.  The piece will build up on the back of your hand.

Repeat the last two steps, wrapping and pulling over until you have a piece that is a bit longer than you want the finished scarf to be. 

When you have your desired length, don't bind off.  Bring a piece of yarn through all 4 loops and then tighten and secure it.

Make 3 pieces the same length & braid them together.

Secure the ends and add fringe.

That's it.  You're ready to wear or gift it!
