I've done this many times with fabric for quilts. I've never tried it with crochet, though I have seen it done. I think blocking before putting the triangles together would probably give me a better seam and pointier points. You just need 6 triangles of whatever pattern you like in 3 different colors. Sew the matching colors into diamonds and arrange them to make a kind of block.
