Textured Toddler's Hat

I like the texture this stitch gives.  It's a crochet that's most like moss or seed stitch.  It's not lacy, so it's versatile and can be tailored for boys or girls.

The pattern is very simple.  With moss stitch you purl where you knit in the row below, with this crochet stitch you sc where you dc in the row below.

For this one I used a worsted weight yarn and size H hook.

Round 1

chain 3 (first DC)

9 DC in ring for a total of 10

slip stitch to join at first chain 3

Round 2

Chain 3 (first DC) sc in same space.  

Repeat with a DC & SC in every DC around - total of 20 stitches

Chain1 SC in first stitch (the chain 3 from the row before) DC & SC in next stitch

This is where I ended the crown - the hat fits a 1-2 year old.  Keep working in the same pattern to make it larger, or use a larger hook or yarn

Leave it plain or fancy it up with flowers or appliques.

Diamont Knit Hat - free pattern

Diamont Knit Hat

This is a simple hat that knits up quickly.  Diamont means diamond and the hat is named for the diamond that makes the crown.  Of course I guess you could turn it a different direction and have a square.

materials:

Medium/lightish weight yarn.    200m (or so)  The one I used was Snowflake wool blend from Hobby Lobby.  It didn’t give a weight, but called for a 3.75 needle.  That’s a size 5 in the US and a 9 in the UK.  

Size 7 double pointed needles or circular - depending on your taste.  I know the yarn called for 5, but I didn’t have a set in that size.  I like the feel of bamboo/wooden tools and it seems my dog likes the taste of them.   Not having 5s and only 3 size 6 needles, I just moved on with the 7s.  Worked out pretty well.  It’s a pretty forgiving pattern.

Cast on 104.  This makes a large hat because I have a big head.  Not everyone has been gifted with a pumpkin sized noggin, so if you need to make it smaller, just decrease by 8s.  

K1 P1 ribbing for 1.5 inches

knit 3 rounds

purl 5 rounds

knit until piece measures 3.5 inches, being careful not to stretch the puckering out.  The purl rounds will pull the fabric up a bit, but measure in the pulled up position.

100 Hats?

In less than a month I will have a birthday.  I do my new year's resolutions on MY new year.  So I start them on my birthday.

Among my resolutions this year is to make 100 hats for charity.  I decided to upload them as I go.  I hope that some of the other crafters who check this blog will join in.  Hats are easy, fun to make and practical to donate.

If you do, I would love to see your creations.  You don't have to do 100.  You can do 1 or 1000 (if you're really ambitious and have invented the 30 hour day)
